For all the years fine art painting has been in my life as an artist, it has been a source of real joy for me.
My paintings result from my personal observation of the scene or subject I choose to portray, and from artistic license I might take to make a better picture. I want to create a visual expression of what I am feeling about each - a landscape, a street scene, a figure, anything that moves me. What makes things interesting to me can be the lighting, the shape, the colors - pictorial values I can show in oils with transparent paint in the shadowy areas and direct impasto brush and knife painting for lights and textures.
I tend to use bold strokes and rich color to portray the west and southwest; the south, however, seems to call for more atmospheric feeling. In Paris with such artistic substance, aura, and ambience all around, it can take a while to choose which scene or subject to paint, but sometimes, just turn a corner, and there it is. My paintings of Provence, in southern France, show that area's ancient architecture, weathered structures, and rough-hewn textures.
